This Day in History: 2000-07-09

Representing the Shire of Toodyay, local resident Carol Zimmerman (part time librarian and full time wife, mother and grandmother) carried the Olympic Torch in the 2000 Summer Olympic Torch Relay during the Northam leg around the town between 6pm and 7pm in the evening.

One of 11,000 torch bearers in Australia, Carol did her 500m at a brisk walk. Fourteen Toodyay District High School students joined other students from surrounding schools to form a guard of honour in the finale in the Jubilee Oval. The Shire of Toodyay purchased the Torch that month for its Corporate Collection. It was planned to display the Torch in the new Aquatic Centre.
