This Day in History: 1998-10-24

A plaque was installed at the Information Bay at the intersection of Toodyay Road and the Toodyay-Northam Road, naming the site the Raleigh Syred Information Bay. Members of the Syred family, the Livestock Transport Association (represented by President George Freestone) and the Toodyay Shire Council (Adrian Bolton) gathered together to attend the ceremony which commemorated the life and work of local identity and transport operator Ralph ‘Raleigh’ Syred (1929-1998).  Max Trenorden MLA, Member for Avon, unveiled the plaque. Mr. Bevan Rumble conceived the idea of dedicating the truck stop to Raleigh. Bevan drove down from Port Hedland to attend the unveiling.
