1988 August 6-7: The 16th annual Avon Descent boat and paddle whitewater race, from Northam to Bayswater, attracted a record number of entries (504 craft and 847 competitors). The Water Authority of Western Australia had added 240 tonnes of rock to Extracts Weir on the Avon River, upstream from Toodyay.
