Weather marred the annual Northam-Toodyay canoe race, in which 32 competiters commenced at a point below the Avon Bridge, Northam, but only 26 crossed the finishing line at Toodyay. Heavy rain fell when canoeists were porting around the Extracts Weir. Five female contestants started at Katrine Bridge. At the conclusion of the race, trophies were presented in the CWA Hall by the Deputy Shire President, Cr. Mac Wroth, followed by a buffet dinner provided by the women of Toodyay. A trophy donated by the Toodyay Shire Council for the Men’s Class 3 event went to Bevan Hill (2 hrs 51 ½ minutes). The Council also presented the trophy for the women’s Class 3, won by Margaret Diamond (1 hr 33 min.). Organisers (not mentioned) satisfied with the results achieved.
