The Toodyay Shire Council and the Rotary Club of Northam sponsored a canoe and kayak race on the Avon River from Northam to Toodyay on a Saturday. The event, watched by some hundreds of spectators, was conducted by the Amateur Canoe Association of W.A. The canoeists had to portage over the Weir as there was not enough water. Bevan Dashwood won the kayak race over the favoured John Trail, who had broken a rudder. The winner’s time was 2 hours 47 minutes. One canoe was broken in half at the Katrine bridge.
