Jack (Johan Jacob) Holzmann, a Dutch immigrant, had recently completed the contract to build 16 weatherboard and asbestos houses in Stirling Terrace, Toodyay, for Industrial Extracts Ltd. The timber had been cut at Edward L. (Ted) Gumley’s sawmill in Toodyay. Holzmann had previously built the seven houses on the Northam-Toodyay Road, near the Industrial Extracts factory site.
