This Day in History: 1928-12-26

‘Hawthornden’ owner Ernest Augustus Lee Steere’s gelding, Second Wind, won the West Australian Derby, after starting as favourite. The horse was trained by J.J. Kelly and ridden by R. Morley. Mr. Lee Steere, Chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club, had purchased the two-year-old gelding in New Zealand in April that year.
