This Day in History: 1909-03-24

At a ratepayers meeting in the Newcastle Municipal Chambers (now the Memorial Hall, Stirling Terrace), chaired by Acting Mayor James Barker Meredith, it was resolved to establish the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Brigade. Oswald L. de Mamiel was elected Secretary.  A committee was appointed to further the movement, and a subscription list was opened.
