This Day in History: 1909-03-24

In the Sunday times:
“Purifying Fire. Speaking at a meeting held, on Wednesday evening to form a fire brigade, Dr. Crawford remarked in lighter vein that he favored fire brigades in a general way, but he thought a fair percentage of Newcastle’s houses wanted fire. The brigade might put a stick to certain houses pointed out to them. At any rate they might be encouraged to look the other way should fire affect any of the houses condemned by the Council. The brigade would be exceeding its duty to put them out! (Laughter). “Herald” (Newcastle).”
