This Day in History: 1908-11-28

Governor Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford turned the first sod of the railway extension from Newcastle to Bolgart. He was presented with a handsome miniature gold shovel, with sandalwood handle. The new railway was to cut the town in half and pass dangerously through the Newcastle State School grounds.
