This Day in History: 1905-05-01
At the Newcastle Municipal Council meeting, Cr. James Barker Meredith’s motion on notice about renaming the main street was discussed. The names submitted were reduced to two: Bedford Terrace (after the current Governor, Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford) and Stirling Terrace (after the former Governor, Sir James Stirling). Each had three supporters, so Mayor Henry Davey Jnr. cast the deciding vote for Stirling Terrace. The street name was not officially changed until 3 May 1911.
