This Day in History: 1904-10-04
A valedictory social was held for Dr. William Mayhew, who was leaving on 6 October to live with his adopted daughter Mrs. R. (Beatrice) Whiteford in Northam. Called “The Old Doctor”, he had had lived in Newcastle for 37 years. Mr. O. Bull, JP, presented him with a smokers’ outfit, as a token of appreciation, with a larger token to follow. Dr. Mayhew’s infirmities had prevented him from continuing to practise.
