This Day in History: 1904-07-23

On the Clackline-Newcastle Railway line, a special train collided with a horse in a cutting at the Seventy-One Mile point, one mile beyond Coorinja, at 9.45pm. Chartered by the Newcastle Football Club, the train was carrying 114 passengers returning home from attending a football match in York. The locomotive and several carriages were derailed. There were no serious injuries, just fainting ladies. The passengers walked the 6 miles home to Newcastle, arriving just after midnight.
