This Day in History: 1903-07-02

The foundation stone of the Convent of Mercy on New Road, Newcastle, was laid by The Most Rev. Mathew Gibney, Bishop of Perth, assisted by the Very Rev. Father O’Farrell C.SS.R, Provincial of the Redemptorist Order in Australia, said to be one of the most eloquent speakers in the State. Hart Bros., Perth, were the contractors for the Sisters of Mercy. An inscribed silver trowel had been created for the occasion, which was attended by over 200 people. Rev. More Hallinan was the local priest.
