This Day in History: 1900-11-24

1900 late November: The new (second) Newcastle Bridge, across the Avon River at Newcastle, was opened to vehicular traffic. Messrs. Ednie and George were the contractors for the Public Works Dept. The bridge (800 ft long and twice as wide as the old one) was completed in late December. Samples of the original 40-year-old piles of the old bridge were sent to Midland Junction as splendid examples of the durability of jarrah.
