A public meeting was held at the Newcastle Mechanics’ Institute, convened by Mayor Edward Holiday, “for the purpose of protecting and forwarding the interest of Newcastle and district in the event of further progress of the Black Boy [Blackboy] Hill goldfield”. The meeting identified its concerns: the lack of a visit from a Government Geologist; and that, if there was to be a railway, it should start from Newcastle. A railway league was formed.
