A public meeting was held in Newcastle in reference to the contemplated new bridge over the Avon River on the Perth-Goomalling Road. Samuel Pole Phillips preferred a dam and causeway. A second bridge, south of the town, was required to give Nunyle and Wongamine residents quicker access to the railway station.
