This Day in History: 1889-09-18
The Rovers Football Club (1885-1899) travelled from Perth in a special saloon carriage, attached to the 7.45am goods train, to play the Newcastle Football Club (Captain: E. Scott) on the Recreation Ground in Newcastle. The local Club won (5 goals to 4). The match was followed by a dinner at James Donegan’s Freemasons’ Hotel. The Rovers returned to Perth the following morning.
