This Day in History: 1889-05-24

The Newcastle Athletic Club held its first Athletic Sports meeting on the Queen’s Birthday on the Recreation Ground in Newcastle. It was a well-attended event, in spite of the showery weather. The location was a piece of land recently purchased by the Club for £180 from Barnard Drummond Clarkson. A pavilion and dressing room were being constructed and the site would soon be fenced.
