This Day in History: 1887-12-26

Under the auspices of the Wesleyan community, a promenade concert was held at the Mechanics’ Institute, Newcastle, to raise funds to pay for seats and a platform in the Temperance Hall, rented by the Wesleyans for services. It seems this was the first time a Christmas Tree had been used in Newcastle as a fundraising effort (the tree was decorated with presents for ticket holders).
