This Day in History: 1887-06-21

A special meeting of the Newcastle Municipal Council accepted the Governor Sir Frederick Napier Broome’s declaration of the change of name from Council and Burgesses to Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses, which officially occurred on 21 June (Queen Victoria’s Jubilee). William George Leeder, Chairman at the time, was therefore the first Mayor.
