This Day in History: 1865-10-20

The Newcastle Race Committee ran its first horse race meeting as a trial on a flat to the west of Newcastle. The meeting featured the Newcastle Stakes, won by Selim, ridden by J. Lockyer. “The course was crowded with the beauty and fashion of the district. ‘Some were rich and rode in chaises, Others poor who walked like blazes.’ ”.
