This Day in History: 1865-09-13
A meeting was held in the Newcastle Hotel to discuss the first official ‘Newcastle Races’ (horse racing) on 20 October, the day after the Toodyay Show. The Stewards were Samuel Pole Phillips, Alex Ferguson, Donald Macpherson, J.G. Thomson, S.E. Burges and J.B. Roe. The Clerk of the Course was Alfred Twine, and the Hon. Secretary was Thomas O’Neill. The name of the race club was not included in the notice, but the name ‘Newcastle Race Committee’ was later used.
