Toodyay History at a Glance: 1870s

The Toodyay Road District was created, sandwiched between the two new Road Districts of Victoria Plains and Northam. The first Road Board was elected. The Municipality of Newcastle was created and its first Council elected. Telegraphic communication commenced. Attending school was made compulsory for children of six to fourteen years, living within three miles of a school. The Oddfellows formed a local lodge. The Mechanics’ Institute and the Good Templars opened their new meeting places. The Newcastle Lock-up was promoted to a Gaol. Cricket and the Newcastle Band played.
